About the Program

Why does NYC need Solar Power?

New York City’s power consumption accounts for more than half of New York State’s total energy use, most of which is generated by petroleum and natural gas plants within city limits, leading to damaged air quality and waterways.

With New York’s bold goal of “70% energy from renewable sources by 2030, and 100% by 2040,” the city must take big steps to contribute.

What is community solar?

In 2017, the NYS Public Service Commission issued a new program called VDER, which increased the value of energy exported by decentralized generators, like community solar systems.

This program encouraged building owners to take advantage of their unused roof space by installing solar arrays in exchange for tax abatements other incentives, as well as a stake in the transition to a clean grid.

As of 2022, NYS has become the top community solar market in the country - with over 1 Gigawatts installed.

Who benefits from the program?

Building owners: take advantage of unused roof space by installing solar panels and receive tax benefits and re-roof payments

People: receive discounted electricity generated on their buildings and participate in a major shift to a clean energy future
